Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Networking is a cornerstone of professional growth, enabling individuals to access opportunities, mentorship, and collaborations. In the digital age, social media platforms like LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram have transformed networking by creating virtual spaces where professionals can connect, share knowledge, and build their careers. In Sokoto South Local Government Area, Sokoto State, young professionals face challenges such as limited access to physical networking events and mentorship programs. Social media offers a practical solution, providing a platform for creating professional networks, accessing industry-specific information, and showcasing skills to a global audience. Research has shown that active engagement on professional platforms like LinkedIn enhances career prospects and fosters innovation through collaborative opportunities (Abdullahi & Bello, 2023). This study examines the use of social media for enhancing networking among young professionals in Sokoto South, highlighting its benefits, challenges, and potential.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Young professionals in Sokoto South often face limited access to professional networks, mentorship, and career development resources due to geographical and economic constraints. While social media provides a promising alternative, its potential is not fully utilized due to factors like inadequate digital literacy, lack of guidance on professional etiquette online, and distractions from non-professional content. This study explores how social media enhances networking among young professionals in Sokoto South and addresses the challenges limiting its effectiveness.
